District Cross Country on Thursday the 26th April

We had 60 children compete at Princes Park for the Carlton District Primary Schools Sports Association Cross Country Championships. Our District is composed of 10 schools which guarantees that the competition is formidable (in every sport). Every one of our students did really well and I was certainly proud of their efforts, achieved in fields of 60 to 70 competitors for each age and gender group. Children who finished in the first ten qualified for the Division Cross Country that will be held on the 13th of June at Bundoora. More info about that event coming soon. But I do know that the 5/6 students on camp will be able to compete at the Regional CC as they are on a “School sanctioned Excursion” That doesn’t mean they can ease off on their training though! Congratulations to George Pyers, James Baikie, Hugo O’Toole, Joel Rodin, Caleb Hogan, Jasmine DePalma, Will Farrar, Jasper Paevere, and Hamish Baikie, who qualified for the Division CC.

State team trials, After the Division stage of trying to qualify for the State team in a variety of Sports we have had many successful students get to this level but the competition has been very hot! Yet Ariel Reyes in Soccer has made it through to the Regional stage, so congratulations! And Good luck to her! Geoff Ratcliffe.

Lunch time Tennis (now week 4 because of the Walkathon) and Bike club is on again commencing week 3

Interschool sport recommences in week 4!

Cross Country for PHPS is on the 19th April from 12.10 to 2.00 and the District event is on the 26th April.  Divsion Cross Country is on the 13th of June and Region on the 20th June, more news when it's available.

Mother's Day Classic

Come and join some PHPS families for the Mother’s Day Classic fun run on Sunday 12th May to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. Follow the link below and register for the 4km walk or run or if really keen there is the 8km run. Please remember to enter PHPS as the team. This is a fantastic event and is lots of fun for the whole family. Everyone gets a medal and most importantly, the run raises vital funds for breast cancer research. Michelle and Sophie will be holding some training runs around Princes Park on Sunday 14/4, 22/4, 29/4 and 6/5 at 9am.

On Tuesday the 27th March five of our students tried out to qualify to represent our District (ten schools in all) to attempt to gain selection in the Primary School State Soccer Team. The competition was extremely good and it was very difficult indeed to progress as only the top four Boys and four girls can represent the District. After an extensive process over seen by one of the State Selectors Ariel Reyes, Lexi Durham Arnold and Theo Streader were successful amongst other talented students from The Carlton District. Next stage in the process is on the 9th of May. Congratulations to everyone who tried out!

Princes Hill P.S. CROSS COUNTRY 2012

We will be holding our School Cross Country event on Thursday the 19th April at Princes Park.
8/9/10 year olds will be running 2 kilometres and 11/12 year olds will be running 3 kilometres. Age groups are determined by what age the child has or will turn this year.
Children who qualify (i.e. top ten in age and gender for the 10y.o. 11y.o. and 12y.o. age groups) will compete in the Carlton District Primary Schools Sports Association Cross Country event to be held on Thursday 26th April, which will also be at Princes Park.
If your child turns 9 this year and wishes to try to qualify for the District Cross Country then they will have to compete with the ten year old age group. Your child will need to inform me of this before the event.
We need parent help too so that we can supervise the course. Please let me know if you can help on the day. The time you are needed is from 12.00 to 2.00. Thank You, Geoff Ratcliffe.

STATE TEAM TRIALS
The Carlton District Primary Schools Sports Association held trials this past Wednesday and we had quite a few of our students put their skills to the test in Basketball, Netball and Football. The competition was tough but we had success in Netball with Emily Hopcraft and Monique Costanzo qualifying for the Divisional trials and Peter Hill did so as well in Football! These trials are in May and the competition will be even stronger. Congratulations to these three and everyone else who attempted to get through.
Regional SWIMMING

11 of our students competed at Northcote Pool on Wednesday the 14th.March. We had great results again! Against very tough competition the results don’t look quite as good on paper as they were at Division level but the efforts put in were even more impressive than last week.
Results are….Shannon Miller came back with a 1st and a 2nd place medal and the other competitors all featured in very close races with plenty of 4th,  5th  and 6th places. Shannon tied for 2nd in Butterfly then had to have a “swim off” to find out who would go to the State Champs for this event after 1st pulled out. In a nail-biting finish Shannon came second by about 5cm! but will still compete in backstroke at the State Championships. Congratulations to Hamish Baikie, Tilly Shepherd, Shannon Miller, Lexi Durham Arnold, Zhan Hui Lim, Quade Ecke, Imogen Howden, George Pyers, Hugo Welch. Ruby McGain and Simona Nicolini for their efforts. Best of luck to Shannon who will be competing in the State Championships on the 29th March.

Swimming The Carlton District Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday the 1ST of March at the Fitzroy Pool and we had 35 of our students qualify for this. All of the children from our school swam their hearts out and all achieved great results. The Division then Regional Swimming Carnivals are on the 8th and 14th of March respectively at Northcote Pool. (Division is the new term for what used to be the Zone Level).TILLY S ZHAN HUI  HAMISH B QUADE E LEXI D A GEORGE P, IMOGEN H, SIMONA N, SHANNON M, RUBY M, HUGO W, have all qualified. Good luck to them all at the next stage on the road to possible State Championship entry!
State Sports Team trials
The Carlton District held Tennis trials on Sunday the 4th March and 4 of our students competed for a place in the District team, they were Hamish B, Simona N, Peter H, William T. After an exhaustive round robin process where each child played 28 games the result of all of this effort saw Peter and Simona along with students from two other District schools make up our team to compete on the 19th of March at the Division level. A fantastic result!
We will be holding trials for Basketball, Football and Netball on the 21st and the 27th March (Soccer only) at North Fitzroy and Spensley St Primary Schools at 3.45. The trials will go for approx 1 hour.
Basketball, Football, Netball, are all at North Fitzroy Primary/Edinburgh Gardens and Soccer at Spensley St Primary, (Clifton Hill).
The trials are being held as each District can only nominate three to five students in each gender for each sport to attend Regional trials to make up the State teams. Other sports such as Hockey and Rugby don’t go through this process, but do hold trials at Regional/State level so if you child has a talent in any particular sport, and wishes to have a go, get them to come and see me.

PHPS Cross Country is on the 19th April (in term 2). Our school Cross Country is usually a great afternoon because of the build up that happens during Phys. Ed. Classes and importantly is continued by keen students after hours. This is not just about trying to win a race but to improve your own health and fitness! So I want to encourage regular training so that completing the 2k or 3k run is a relatively comfortable experience!
Children who turn 8, 9 or 10 this year will run 2k and 11, 12, 13 year olds run 3k. The top ten finishers in the 10, 11, and 12/13 y.o groups will qualify for the District Cross Country on the 26th April. We start the 9 year olds with the 8’s as we have such a large number of them, but if there are any children who will be turning 9 this year and wish to try and qualify for the District Cross Country they need to see me as soon as possible so that they can start and compete with the ten year olds. (Age groups for all School and Interschool competitions are based on the age that a child turns in that calendar year)

School Swimming Carnival, Thursday 23rd Feb.

A great morning was had by all children at our swimming carnival, where some fantastic efforts were observed! Not only those that managed to qualify for the District Swimming Carnival on the 1st of March but by all of those children that entered an event, and a special mention to a new student who entered every single event even though she isn’t the strongest swimmer around, a very brave effort Katelyn!
A big thank you to the parents that were there to support their children and in particular to those that helped in an official capacity. A fine effort by the children in Green House saw them as the Champion House for this year!

If you are in grade 3 or away on the 9th come and see me asap and we will sort something out. We will also be training for our school Cross Country event this term, (amongst other things) but we will be holding our School event on the first Thursday of term 2 as this term is shorter than usual, State team selection begins at School and District level for many sports. Lunch time Tennis and Bike Club will be recommencing in term 2!

Bike Club has finished off, (after a haphazard schedule this year) with a great ride to Kew Boathouse, the Quarries playground in Cllifton Hill and surrounds, we'll be back in 2012 for more!

Swimming
Early in 2012 we will be having our School Swimming Carnival (on the 23rd of Feb), so hopefully children will be thinking about which events they would like to enter, All children in grades 4,5,6 are involved plus those in grade three who feel confident about swimming 50 metres.- Plenty of time to practise!

The Afl Draft!
One of our past students, who still drops by occassionally to say hello was picked up by the mighty Tigers as pick no 15. Congratulations to Brandon Ellis who has pursued his dream and made it happen, ie to become an AfL footballer, Now the real hard work begins! Fantastic Brandon!

Interschool Sport
We've finished our "summer" season and our teams performed very well with great progress seen over the seven weeks in the way they performed and worked as teams. The standout result for this season was our "Red' Bat tennis team who were equal first in the competition. Congratulations to all!

State Athletic Championships.
After great results at the Divisional and Regional Athletics our Relay team of Hamish B, Theo S, George P, Dante F B and Lexi D A competed on Monday at The State Championships where they came 5th.  That’s 5th from all the schools in Victoria, a result that we are all very proud of. As well as this team effort, Hamish competed in the 1500m where he came 6th! Equally outstanding!

Regional Athletics, 18th October, Hamish B. is off to the State championships in November for 1500meters, where he came first! But also was part of the ten year old boys relay team who came second!, So they are off to the State Champs. as well. The team consists of Hamish, George P, Theo S, Dante F.B. and Lexi D.A. There are five names there because Theo was laid up in Hospital so at the last minute Lexi stepped in and obviously did a brilliant job along with the rest of the boys. We will need to conduct a trial to determine who goes along and I know one boy will be disappointed but whoever it is, they shouldn't be as they have all contributed to make the team successful!

Interschool Sport, Starting Thursday the 20th October all students in grades 5/6 will be participating in sport against students from the other 9 schools in the Carlton District. We will be walking to Edinburgh Gardens to play in the following, Rounders, Newcomb, Bat tennis, Basketball and Cricket. The season lasts for seven weeks. Don't forget your hat and a drink bottle!

Tennis has been conducted from the 25th of October, at lunchtimes for seven weeks. We will be offering this again in 2012. An enormous Thank You to Toni Hardy for her  commitment in coming along each Tuesday lunchtime to help out!

Bike Club is also starting again on the 25th of October so those who are in Bike Club make sure you come prepared!
