Colour My World
Prep-1
Inspired by the colour dot paintings by Damien Hirst, students created a
series of dots using primary and secondary colours.
They examined the words of Damien Hirst,
‘To create that
structure, to do those colours, and do nothing. I suddenly got what I wanted.
It was just a way of pinning down the joy of colour.’
These words inspired us to create a series of collaborative pieces about
colour where we had the simple pleasure of ‘pinning down colour’.
Our first step was to play
around with primary and secondary colours, discovering those colours that we enjoyed pinning down on
paper, and also discovering those colours we felt belonged together.
The following week we
took the coloured circles, and worked in small groups pinning down the colours
onto a board.
We talked together
about where to put the colours and we also discovered that we could make
patterns with the colours.
We stood back and
viewed our work and made some necessary adjustments.
The completed panels
were full of the joy of working with colour!
The grade 1 students
followed the same process of exploring Damien Hirst’s paintings but something
extraordinary happened when they started pinning down the coloured circles on
boards. Using their imagination, the grade 1 students spontaneously created a series of
imaginary creatures.
It seemed that these
creatures captured the students’ joy of working with colour.
