Last year, artist Helen Johnson, arrived at Princes Hill Primary School to gather images for the flag she was to design for On Top of the World: Flags for Melbourne as part of Melbourne Now.
At the unveiling ceremony of the design for Melbourne Now, Helen also
presented the students with a blank silk flag: an invitation to further explore
their community and find a creative means to celebrate their values and
identity. As a result of this invitation, Helen joined our school in Term 2 as
an artist in residence.
Each week in their visual art class, students engaged in a
series of projects that encouraged them to creatively explore new ways of
expressing their ideas about values, identity and community. They worked across
a range of mediums and approaches including life drawing, mapping, painting,
drawing and collage.
Four main flag designs emerged from the hundreds of art works
created by the students.

Now it is our opportunity as a community to vote for the design
we would like to see as our final printed flag design. Students will vote for
their favourite design at school. Parents and members of the wider community
may register their vote on the clipboards displayed with the designs outside
the visual art room next week. Vote
will commence on Monday 13th October and will close on Friday 17th
October.
