The Visual Art program provides a balanced and diverse series of learning experiences that expose children to a range of mediums, artists and skills development. It is carefully constructed around two ‘Artist in Residence’ programs and involves building on previous experiences and skills from earlier term and year work. The Visual Art program at PHPS is coherent and progressive, each part of the program designed to be an integral part of the overall program.
In Visual Art classes, children spend 55 minutes a week in the Visual Art studio.
In that time, children are encouraged to be inspired by their observations of the world around them. They transfer these observations into new ways of viewing each other and the world.
Through the careful study of art skills and use of relevant materials children are encouraged to explore freely and with confidence.
Each term we build on our skill base and knowledge. We create and make and explore and respond to the wide variety of mediums in the area of the Visual Arts.
Children are also inspired through their observations of artists’ work.
Each term we explore a theme through a selection of artists’ works and media, and when possible we relate our studies to exhibitions in major galleries.
Twice a year we link with our wider school community and have Artist Residencies when artists come and share their expertise and passion with the children. We also endeavour to find links, and collaborate with, the Italian language program to study and be inspired by Italian culture and art.
