Notizie Italiane.....
Students across the school are engaging in a variety of Italian experiences to consolidate their language learning.
The prep students have created beautiful posters with a birthday theme to decorate the neighbourhood in readiness for Pinocchio's party! They have discussed what regali he might like, decorazioni, giochi, cibo there might be at a birthday party. The next step is to make a beautiful birthday card for Pinocchio, with a special message inside: Tanti auguri Pinocchio!
The students in the years 1 and 2 neighbourhoods have been enjoying preparing for a shopping experience fare la spesa! They have been practising counting in Italian and are in the process of designing some delightful euro to use when participating in the shopping interaction. The students have drawn on their learning in term 2 about Italia and are incorporating many cultural elements into their designs. Bravi!
In the 3/4 neighbourhood the students are investigating numbers to 100 and learning that they can be quite tricky, especially ventuno, ventotto, trentuno, trentotto etc! The students are particularly enjoying exploring their learning through the Languages Online website. They have the opportunity to play a variety of language games designed to help consolidate and assess their learning. I encourage them to play these games at home to deepen their learning too!
The students in the year 5/6 neighbourhood are eagerly preparing for their trip to the Gelobar on Monday the 9th December. They will be going during their regular Italian session. A note will be sent home soon regarding the cost of the gelato and other details. The students have enjoyed viewing some authentic texts, such as Italian advertising and the Firenze Gelato Festival and are now designing their own gelateria, complete with gusti, prezzi, nome e pubblicita`.
Buongiorno a tutti...bentornati al 4o trimestre...
il Coro dei Bambini....
This week our school was very excited to host the first workshop with renowned singer and musician Kavisha Mazzella. Students from Brunswick North and Brunswick South West joined us in rehearsing several songs that will be performed at our special evening, Friday 22nd November. Kavisha helped us to refine our singing, to work on actions and accompanied us on both accordion and guitar. She inspired us with her beautiful voice and wonderful playing. We are very excited about the next two workshops which will take place on Thursday 7/11 9.00-12.00 at Brunswick North PS and Wednesday 13/11 9-12.30 at Brunswick South West PS!
This term is action packed, with il campeggio italiano at Creswick, il Coro dei Bambini workshops with Kavisha Mazzella and La festa del canto, hosted this year by
Brunswick North PS. All of these experiences are designed to stimulate the
students’ interest in Italian language and culture and to inspire them to take
their learning further.
Il Campeggio Italiano
a Creswick, 9-11 Ottobre.
Another highly successful Italian camp has just been
completed. 91 year 5 and 6 students from six inner city schools (Princes Hill,
Merri Creek, Brunswick South West, Brunswick North, Fitzroy North and Spensley)
have spent three days enjoying urban and rural experiences, highlighting the
rich contribution of both Italians and Swiss-Italians to Australian society and
culture. Our camp commenced this year with a wonderful initiative: a day visit
to the Fogolar Furlan Club in
Thornbury, where students participated in bocce,
Italian cards, biscotti making,
Tarantella and soccer workshops. We enjoyed a delicious lunch of gnocchi, pasta and gelato. It was delightful to observe the interactions
between the students and the friendly and generous members of the Furlan club who gave up their time to
share the Italian language and culture with them.
Here are the thoughts of the students……
We went to Fogolar
Furlan club and we played calcio,
bocce e carte italiane. Everyone made some biscotti as well. We had gnocchi
for lunch and gelato for dolce. We learnt a dance called Tarantella which was really fun to learn
and saw a spettacolo called Pantalone’s Inn. My favourite part of the day was eating the biscotti. We also went to the Macaroni
Factory and learned about its history and to Cricket Willow where there was a
cricket field and they made cricket bats out of willow trees. On our last day we went to Lavandula which was the lavender farm. There were lavender lollies,
soaps and bunches of it. The time I had there was enjoyable and I would go
back. Sara
At Italian camp we went to the Furlan club which was awesome. First of all we went to calcio (soccer). We did a lot of
dribbling around cones. Afterwards we played carte italiane (Italian cards). I didn’t win but Sasha and Flossy
won heaps. Afterwards we made biscotti
that we got to eat and they were really really good. Next we danced the Tarantella, which comes from the word tarantula. Then we got really good gnocchi e gelato. But my favourite,
favourite, favourite thing was Pantalone’s
Inn which was really really, really funny. And to the future year 5s I
would definitely recommend Italian camp! Maya
We went to Fogolar
Furlan club and played bocce. It
was the first time, so I really enjoyed it. We also made biscotti della nonna. The best food was gli gnocchi. One of the highlights was Lavandula, it was molto
benissimo!! I bought lavender lollies and it was molto delizioso too!! And another highlight was trivia night, I
found it molto difficile. But our
group came second. I learnt that 13 people lived in the small cottage in Lavandula. I really enjoyed this campeggio
italiano! Ciao arrivederci! Mai
At Italian camp we went to Fogolar Furlan and played soccer, played carte, bocce and made biscotti and danced the Tarantella. My favourite highlight was
the lavender farm and the Fogolar Furlan
club. My favourite was the tarantella
from the Fogolar Furlan club and
learning about the house at the lavender farm. I learnt lots of things but the
one that is stuck in my head is posso
andare in bagno? I thought it was a great experience and would recommend it
to the year 4s. Tilly S
I really enjoyed Italian camp. I enjoyed going to the Furlan club and learning how to play bocce and do the Tarantella dance. I also learnt that the Tarantella dance was made for when the tarantula bites, you do the
dance and you sweat the venom out. I really enjoyed going to Lavandula, a beautiful lavender farm. Grazie, Ruby A
At the start of the trip we went to an Italian club and they
had lots of Italian activities set up for us. My favourite part of the camp was
when we went to Lavandula and we
bought lots of things and learned a lot of new things. I also enjoyed the Macaroni
Factory because I learned how and when macaroni was made and it was very
interesting. Another thing I enjoyed was when we went to Cricket Willow and I thought
it was really interesting about what they were saying about the history of the
cricket bat. Arrivederci! Andrea
I really enjoyed
playing bocce and visiting Cricket Willow and making pasta. I learnt that when people
get bitten by a spider they thought if they danced they would sweat the venom
off. I also learnt that it takes 20 years for a willow tree to grow. Ciao, arrivederci! Jude
I really enjoyed the bocce
and Cricket Willow. I really liked the food at the Furlan club. It takes 22 years to make a handmade cricket bat. The most
bellissimo place was Lavandula, the lavender farm. Grazie mille, arrivederci Jack
Term 4 Italian learning focus:
Prep: the
students in the Prep neighbourhood will prepare for a special celebration:
Pinocchio’s birthday! They will revise and extend their knowledge of numbers,
learn to ask about and state age, make invitations and birthday cards. The
students will learn many relevant idiomatic expressions related to birthdays
and celebrations and compare these celebrations with familiar celebrations in
Australia.
Year One/Two: the
students in the year one and two neighbourhoods will participate in a variety of
learning experiences related to shopping, numbers and interacting with others.
They will consider the contribution of Italian culture to our shopping in
Melbourne. Students will expand their knowledge of numbers, learn to ask the
cost of something, use their manners to say please and thank you, use greetings
and other important phrases to interact with others. They will use puppets or
participate in role plays themselves to enact a shopping scene. Students will

endings of nouns change to indicate plural.
Year Three/Four: students
in the year 3/4 neighbourhood will participate in learning experiences related
to numbers and their place in our lives. They will learn to count to 100 and
beyond and to use their knowledge of these numbers to state their age,
birthday, address etc. They will consider the concept of singular/plural in
Italian and note the difference with the English language. Students will
participate in online learning, playing Languages
Online games which will enhance their learning and provide many
opportunities for self-assessment.
Year Five/Six: this
term students in the 5/6 neighbourhood will participate in learning experiences
designed to prepare them for a visit to a local gelateria. They will have the opportunity to use their language in
an authentic context, communicating with members of the Italian speaking
community in our local area. The students will focus on the important elements
of an oral interaction, including greetings, use of manners, asking for certain
flavours, expressing likes and dislikes and saying please and thank you. Students
will demonstrate their learning both in practice oral interactions in class, at
the gelateria and in written form
through comics and posters.
Term 3
Assemblea degli specialisti: martedi`, il 3 settembre
This coming Tuesday many of the students in the 3/4 neighbourhood will be sharing their learning at the specialist assembly. They are eagerly rehearsing a short skit in the target language and a traditional dance to entertain you. Buon divertimento!

Il campeggio italiano: expressions of interest for the Inner North Italian camp at Creswick must be returned by Monday, 2nd September please.
Ciao a tutti! Oggi e` Ferragosto- il 15 Agosto!
Ferragosto is a national Italian holiday, dating from Roman times, when Emperor Augustus ordered month-long festivities-games, races and rituals-to honour the goddess Diana. It marks the height of the holiday season. Many seaside villages (where people are holidaying) conclude the celebrations with magnificent fireworks (fuochi d'artificio)displays.

Il Campeggio italiano
This week I invited interested students in year 5 to complete an expression of interest for our forthcoming Italian camp (9-11th October). Now in its nineth year, the camp is attended by students from Princes Hill, Spensley St, North Fitzroy, Merri Creek, Brunswick North and Brunswick South West Primary Schools. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves for three days in Italian history, language and culture through visits to an Italian club (Fogolar Furlan), historic sites such as the Macaroni Factory at Hepburn Springs and Cricket Willow and Lavandula at Shepherd's Flat. Students participate in a variety of experiences to enhance their oral capacity and to deepen their knowledge of Italian and Swiss-Italian migration to Australia.
Expression of interests are due back at school by Thursday, 22nd August.
Una collaborazione con North Melbourne Primary School.
We have commenced an exciting cross-cluster, blended learning collaboration with North Melbourne Primary School. Students in the Chiacchieroni extension program are participating in a project using the Polycom device to facilitate video conferencing with NMPS. The students are rehearsing a skit in Italian to perform for their peers from NMPS via Polycom. The schools will each view the other's oerformance, then give real-time feedback in Italian, using a rubric to assist them.
The students are very excited about this project. Thus far we have met once via Polycom to introduce ourselves in the target language. We will get together at lunchtime to rehearse, then present our first performance next Wednesday.
In bocca al lupo tutti!
Per favore...
If you speak Italian and would like to contribute to the Italian learning at Princes Hill Primary School-by reading a story, singing a song, teaching a game, relating anecdotes...then please let me know. I know the children's experience of the language would be enriched by your contribution. You can email me at the address below..
Grazie mille!
Buongiorno! There has been a lot of delightful singing around the school lately. Students have been learning some delightful songs from the very famous Italian song competition: Lo Zecchino D'Oro. The students in prep, one and two are eagerly singing Volevo un gatto nero. Students in years 3-6 are learning about a pulcino (chick) who wants to dance like his animal friends, with amusing results! The song is entitled Il pulcino cha cha cha.
Singing is a wonderfully engaging way to learn a language, as the rhythm and words "get stuck in your head." ( in the words of many students!) You can find these songs on Youtube.

Italian learning journey.
Students will explore the Italian language through participation
in a variety of experiences such as choral reading, singing, dance and
movement, role play, creating and making, drawing and writing. The Italian
environment also provides many opportunities for language use and revision through
resources such as picture story books, illustrated vocabulary resources,
posters and theme cards, soft toys and puppets.
Students will create little Italian picture story books to share
with their classmates and families. The emphasis will be on the use of
repetition to reinforce key expressions and vocabulary.

In term 2 the students in years 1/2 will explore Italian language
relating to adventure, Italy, travel, family and imagination. They will follow
the adventures of the little red car as he travels through Italy, introducing

Students will work cooperatively to rehearse and perform short skits
in Italian. They will create their own storyboards/comics as to serve as scripts
for original performances.
Martedi`, il 19 marzo:
Today the achievements of the Italian program were profiled at
assembly, with students introducing themselves and their nationalities in the
target language, performing a traditional Italian dance/rhyme and singing an
Italian version of the very well-known song: “it’s a small world”.
This evening I was delighted to attend a very special event at the
Cinema Nova. La storia di Domenica Pati, (a
short film created by former students Jasmine, Imogen, Simona and Monique as
part of the Forza Giorgio Mangiamele! project),
was officially launched and screened to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week. What a thrill to view our film on the ‘big
screen’ and to catch up with our former students and their families. It was a
wonderful opportunity to see the students, teachers and families of the four
other schools involved in the project and to celebrate their achievements!
Weeks 7 & 8:
Preps:
During these two weeks the students have enjoyed learning more
about emotions in Italian, making funny faces and identifying them in Italian.
Years 1 &2:
We have been anxiously awaiting cooler weather in order to go
outside and play our new game: Regina,
reginella. Through this game the students learn to follow simple
instructions in Italian, to name and identify some animals in the target
language and to revise numbers. Students have also enjoyed playing Tombola!, a traditional Italian version
of bingo, where we have revised key language learning from the term.
Years 3-6:
The students have enjoyed being immersed in the world of Muzzy ( il grande Muzzy!). This animated DVD has immersed the students in
the Italian language and provided them with revision of key language (eg
greetings, manners, numbers and adjectives) and an introduction of the verb essere-to be. Over these weeks the
students have created a visual and written response in the form of a poster, to
demonstrate their language learning.
Weeks 5 & 6:
This week I invited interested students in years 3-6 to
participate in Il coro dei bambini. This
choir will rehearse fortnightly on Monday lunchtime. We will be learning to
sing traditional, folk and popular songs. We will work together with Brunswick
North and Brunswick South West to produce a performance later in the year.
There was a very promising turn up of approximately 40 students keen to learn
and perform Italian songs. The choir experience will certainly enhance student
capacity in Italian!
Preps:
During these two weeks the students have consolidated their
ability to use greetings in Italian; they are also learning to say per favore (please) and grazie (thank you) when interacting with
the teacher and classmates.
The prep students are increasingly
able to reproduce some of the language learnt and are enjoying saying ciao/buongiorno when they see me in the
playground and around the schoo!
Years 1/2:
The students in these two
neighbourhoods are exploring traditional Italian games. During these two weeks
they will learn to play Regina,
reginella. This game has a strong focus on chant and rhyme, and
incorporates numbers and animals. They are also continuing to play girotondo, and are enjoying interacting
with one another in the target language.
Years 3-6:

concept of culture, nationality and immigration. The students have learned to
name many nationalities, to describe family cultural backgrounds and to make
the appropriate agreement of the adjective with the noun. For example, Lei e` americana. Lui e` americano.
Weeks 3 & 4:
Preps:
Over this fortnight we have focused on developing an ability to
follow some simple instructions in Italian, such as finding several colours in
the courtyard or classroom. We practised using some of the language from the story in our
classroom interactions: Mamma mia! and
Smettila!
Years 1 & 2:
We have been exploring the notion of il mondo (the world). We looked at a globe to compare the sizes of
Italy (piccolo!) and Australia (grande!). The students have learnt to
compare the relative sizes of Italy and Australia through an Italian version of
“It’s a small world”.
We made our own chart of il
girotondo, labelling in Italian. Mi
chiamo …….
Years 3-6:
During these two weeks we have reinforced our ability to use io sono etc and combining these with
adjectives and other personal information. Students have also learnt to use tu sei, lui e` and lei e` in simple sentences to describe people.
Weeks 1 & 2:
Preps:
The students were introduced to the puppet
Pinocchio, learnt to sing Ciao
Buongiorno, and learnt to use the greetings ciao and buongiorno. They listened to the story, Ecco
Pinocchio, and discovered some idiomatic expressions like Mamma mia! The students created a beautiful cover picture of Pinocchio for their Italian
workbooks.
Years 1/2:
During these two weeks there was an introduction to the unit of work for this term: giochiamo!
During Italian sessions the students will engage in a major focus on Italian traditional games to link with the classroom
inquiry.
Students learned to do a girotondo..... They explored different ways of playing girotondo with friends and wrote the lyrics for the rhyme in their workbooks and created a
design.
Years 3-6:
Students were introduced to the unit of study for this term: a focus on culture, nationality, family and immigration. They revisited classroom routines and instructions. Students viewed the DVD Muzzy, with an emphasis on the verb, essere. They practised using io
sono, tu sei through language games and writing experiences
Chiacchieroni!!

profile in their workbooks.
Italiano 2013
Buongiorno a tutti e benvenuti
all’italiano 2013
It promises to be another
exciting and challenging year!
Prep:
The Prep children will be introduced to the puppet Pinocchio, his father Geppetto and friend Grillo. Through interactions with the puppets, the teacher and each
other the children will discover that Italian is another way in which we
communicate with one another. They will learn to use greetings (ciao, buongiorno, arrivederci), and use
manners in Italian (per favore and grazie).
Students will explore bilingual texts, participate in choral
reading, singing, chants, movement, dance, language games and drawing. This
term they will learn to name themselves in Italian and to identify some
feelings in the target language.
Year 1 and 2:
Students in these neighbourhoods will continue to build on
their repertoire of communicative language. They will, in line with the
classroom inquiry into culture, explore the culture of Italian traditional
games that children play. This will be an opportunity to explore chants, rhymes
and instructional language, with an emphasis on fun and repetition. Students
will be encouraged to explore the Italian language through frequent
interactions with one another and the teacher. They will build their capacity
to read and write simple Italian words and phrases.
Year 3/4 and 5/6:
This term students in the 3/4 and 5/6 neighbourhoods will
explore the unit, La Mia Storia, My Story.
They will explore Italian language relating to family, learning to describe
their family in Italian. They will learn to name nationalities and to use
adjectives appropriately. They will create a family tree, labelling the family
members in Italian. Students will explore the Italian language through
experiences which include singing, chants, language games, interactions with
one another in the target language, viewing, reading, writing and drawing.
Chiacchieroni!
Chiacchieroni is
an extension class offered to highly motivated students in the 5/6
neighbourhood. This class provides interested students with the opportunity to
extend themselves in their learning, to develop greater confidence in oral
Italian, and to participate in learning experiences which encourage students to
optimise their use of the target language.
