Ciao a tutti! Bentornati
all'italiano 2014
This year promises to be another exciting and challenging one as we strive to immerse ourselves in the Italian language and culture!
TERM 4 NEWS
Il campeggio italiano...era fantastico, magnifico....eccellente!
Last week I had the pleasure of accompanying 14 year 5 students to the Inner North Italian Network Campeggio Italiano. The camp provided students with many opportunities to extend and consolidate their Italian speaking and listening skills. We were blessed with beautiful weather, even la luna rossa (the red moon, as a result of the lunar eclipse!) The students greatly enjoyed making new friends, visiting sites of historical interest and exploring Italian culture through cooking, dance, performance, film, music, cards, bocce and soccer. Grazie a tutti for your eager participation!
This term will see many exciting events taking place as part of the Italian program at Princes Hill Primary School.
In week 1, 15 year 5 students will take part in il campeggio italiano, a 3 day urban and rural linguistic and cultural experience. They will visit the Furlan Club in Thornbury, making biscotti, playing bocce and scopa, learning to dance the tarantella and taking part in a soccer clinic. The students will travel to Creswick, where they will have the opportunity to interact with students from 5 other participating schools, communicating where possible in Italian. Whilst in Creswick we will visit places of cultural and historical significance: Cricket Willow, The Macaroni factory and Lavandula, all sites established by Swiss-Italians during the gold rush of the 1850s.
The Coro dei Bambini will take part in 3 workshops with the renowned singer-songwriter Kavisha Mazzella, culminating in a performance towards the end of the year.
Interested students in years 3/4 will be invited to participate in La festa del canto, a performing arts showcase for participating schools in our Inner North Network.
All of these events are designed to enrich the language learning of the students, to enable them to explore Italian culture and to interact with peers and teachers from other schools in Italian, building their communicative capacity.

Meanwhile, the students in years 3-6 have been investigating their diverse school community: what nationalities and languages are represented at Princes Hill Primary School?

Bravi tutti!
il 7 Maggio:
Students in years 3-6 have been enjoying exploring the Languages Online website, in particular focusing on countries and nationalities. They are learning to name and locate various countries on a world map and to state where they come from. The students are enjoying working together to explore the world and expand their Italian repertoire!
"Di dove sei?"
"Vengo dall'Italia."
Languages Online is a highly useful tool to assist students to explore, extend and revise their Italian knowledge. It is also lots of fun, as students learn through playing interactive games.
Languages Online
Prep-2:
The whole school inquiry is focusing on change, and in particular how we can bring about change using our
imagination (Prep). The students in years 1 and 2 are exploring how we can
bring about positive change: “be the
change you want to see in the world” In the Italian program students will
explore how superheroes can bring about positive change: this links with
student wellbeing and in particular with KidsMatter.
The students will explore the attributes of supereroi,
learn some simple adjectives to describe them and idiomatic expressions to
express feelings and emotions. This will link also with their knowledge and
exploration of the kimochis. The
students will learn to create simple comics using familiar expressions and
supported by the teacher. They may create puppets of their own supereroi and devise a simple puppet
show or animation to demonstrate and share their learning.
Years 3-6:
Students in the years 3/4 and 5/6 neighbourhoods will participate
in learning experiences related to nationalities, cultures and belonging. Students
will engage in a variety of experiences designed to enhance their knowledge of
the many nationalities, cultures and languages that make up our school
community. They will explore the notion of a positive school community through
awareness and appreciation of its members. This will link with and aim to
enhance student wellbeing and sense of belonging and pride in the school
community. In particular, students will access Languages Online to engage in learning experiences and self-assessment,
and to give them further opportunities to hear modelled oral language. The
students will, as always, be encouraged to use the target language in key
interactions with the teacher and peers. They will learn to identify and name countries,
languages and nationalities, and to use these in descriptions about themselves
and their peers. They will learn/revisit how to use the feminine and masculine
form of the adjective (sono
australiano/australiana). They will revise the names of family members as
they describe their family background.
settimana 10-13 marzo:
This week the prep students are eagerly practising their colours and also enjoying learning about Pinocchio. They have been introduced to some useful idiomatic expressions such as Mamma mia! and Smettila`! The students in years prep-4 greatly enjoyed viewing an episode of Pocoyo, (in Italian of course!), entitled Colora il mio mondo. They were able to interact with the story and call out the colours in Italian.
The Pocoyo episodes in Italian can be viewed on Youtube and provide an opportunity to hear simple spoken Italian at home.
Many students have been keen to purchase the Italian flashcards app for their (or their parents'!) ipad or ipod. The app is FREE and enables students to greatly expand their vocabulary and to assess themselves through a simple selection game.
Students in years 3-6 have been reading simple Italian comics which reinforce key language, particularly in relation to school and the classroom. They are now working collaboratively to prepare and present a simple role play to their peers.
settimana 17-21 febbraio:
This week students in years 1-6 are eagerly practising asking for something in Italian. They are learning to combine the phrase, posso avere? with known and new vocabulary to ask for a pizza, gelato, limonata (very useful for a trip to Italy or to a local caffe` or gelateria) or a classroom item such as una penna, una matita. The students have designed their very own mascots to enhance their learning.
The prep students have embraced their first encounters with the Italian language! They are eagerly singing ciao, buongiorno, learning to say si`, no and to name some colours in Italian. We have looked at an Italian flashcard app to help us learn colour vocabulary. Febbraio:
Our extension class, Chiacchieroni, will commence next Thursday, 20th February. Students in the 5/6 neighbourhood who show a passion and interest in the Italian language are invited to complete an expression of interest and return it to school by Friday.
Il coro dei bambini:
Our highly successful Italian choir will continue this year: open to students from years 3-6, rehearsals will take place at Monday lunchtimes in the 5/6 neighbourhood.
Benvenuti to our Preps and other new students to Italian sessions!
This term the prep students will discover that Italian is another way in which we communicate, learn to greet one another and the teacher, meet some special friends such as Pinocchio, Geppetto, Grillo, Mario and Luigi, learn to introduce themselves in Italian, to say please and thank you and to follow simple instructions in the target language.
Students in years 1-6 will be encouraged to use Italian as much as possible in interactions with the teacher and classmates.
